White Water Lily, Canandaigua Lake NY

The white water lily, native to eastern North America, is common in the shallows of streams, ponds, and lakes. It is easily recognized by its large, circular bright green floating leaves and large white flowers, which are often fragrant. Flowers open in the early morning and close about noon. The stout rhizomes are spongy with hollow spaces for storing oxygen that is transported down the stems from the leaves. It is an excellent oxygenator for ponds prone to algae, and provides habitat for fish and amphibians. I love to paddle my kayak close to them and pause to enjoy their beauty. Did you know the underside of the leaves are a different color? They are so lovely as they float and move gently with the wind and water. Double matted and framed to 10x10.
