Turkey Tail

Turkey Tail gets its name from its multicolored zones which resemble the tail feathers of wild turkeys. It is a common polypore mushroom found throughout the world, and grows in clusters of leathery thin brackets on logs and stumps of deciduous trees. This mushroom causes white rot of the sapwood and can add to the decomposition process. It plays a large role in returning nutrients to the soil in woodlands. I really enjoy finding them in the forest, and marvel at the many different variations in color and pattern. Double matted and framed to 10x10, available at Gay Street Gallery beginning March 22.
