A Wee Fern Along the Trail, Shenandoah National Park
This sweet tiny Christmas Fern growing out of a little nook in the rocks caught my eye on a recent hike on the Rose River Loop Trail. This fern has leathery green fronds with stocking shaped leaflets, and stays deep green throughout the winter, hence the name Christmas Fern. Its older fronds curl around to shield the plant’s vulnerable new growth from harsh winter conditions. New growth emerges as silvery fiddleheads in spring. Its dense root system helps to stabilized the soil, especially on slopes. In folklore, it was believed to ward off evil, especially when picked on Christmas Eve. Image is 6x6, double matted and framed to 10x10. Available at Middle Street Gallery in Washington, VA through June 28.
